Ocean City Calls!

From Oklahoma I come every year to enjoy all that Ocean City has to offer.  It takes me back to my roots. I always stay at the same place each year.  I try hard to get a room with an ocean view.  Hard to find an ocean view in Oklahoma.

My Project that I did at school follows:

Ocean City, New Jersey - presented by Larkin Brown for my Class Project:

WHAT:  Ocean City, New Jersey is an island.  I have gone to the Osborne's Inn since I was four years old.

WHY:  I love it here because Peggy Ann is really nice and I like the seashore.  (I love Brown's donuts!)

Who:  My Mom started going to Osborne's twenty years ago.  This year my sister Ali and I are going together.

Where:  Osborne's Inn is one block from the Atlantic Ocean.  It is on the map below at D-15.

When:  It takes seven hours to get there.  Every day we ride bikes on the boardwalk and go to the beach.

A Brief History of Ocean City, New Jersey

Known first as Peck's Beach, a seven mile stretch of sand dunes, meadows, and cedar swamps was probably named for John Peck, a whaler who used the island as a staging spot for his whaling operation. The island had served as a summer fishing camp for local Indians, a grazing land for cattle driven out from the mainland, and an occasional hunting or picnic spot for mainland residents who would come out by boat.  Original ownership of the land was by the Somers family.

In 1879 four Methodist ministers, Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake and William Burrell chose the island as a suitable spot to establish a Christian retreat and camp meeting, on othe order of Ocean Grove.  They met under a tall cedar tree which stands today at 6th Street and Asbury Avenue.  Having chosen the name 'Ocean City', the founders incorporated the 'Ocean City Association', laid out streets and sold lots for cottages, hotels and businesses.  The Tabernacle was built between Wesley and Asbury Avenues and between 5th and 6th Streets. Camp Meetings were held by the following summer.

From these beginnings Ocean City has grown into the town we know today.  The first bridge was built in the island in 1883.  The railroad soon followed. The first school began in 1881. The boardwalk grew and was relocated several times.  The ship, the Sindia, joined other shipwrecks on our beach.  A large fire in 1927 changed the town significantly.

The home that my Mother and family stay in each year was originally a single family home built for the Munger Family.  In 1974 the home that we stay in each year was bought by the Frank and Peggy Ann Osborne Family.  We love Ocean City and we love the Osbornes.

This was a fun project for me to do.   I hope you like what I've learned about Ocean City, New Jersey.

August, 2009

Thanks so much for making our stay at the Osborne's Inn in Ocean City one that we will always remember.  We were treated like we were Family and you made us feel right at home.  Carlie made a friend with your grandson, JP, and enjoyed playing with him and the other children.  You have a charming and a lovely place.  Thank you for sharing it with us.

We really needed to get away from it all, even for a short while.  That's why Ocean City was the best place for us to just sit and relax.  We love the shore and the boardwalk.  It's the best place to forget any troubles. Your place is in the best location because it is so close to the beach and to the boardwalk. Thanks again for your hospitality.

'Since then I was hooked'

My first memories of the Osborne house was when about eight children lined up on the porch and said to us as we walked up the steps, 'Welcome to the Osborne's Inn'.  Since then, I was hooked.  Being Irish myself and meeting Peggy Ann, Frank and so many of their children and grandchildren, the graciousness just flowed and immediately I felt at home.

we have been living in Florida for the past twenty years, but return every year to Ocean City for one big family reunion.  We look forward to this experience all year with anticipation and excitement that cannot be explained. My husband Ray put it best, 'I wish time coul just stand still when we are here'.  We discovered the osbornes Inn in 2007.  The Osbornes make us always feel as if we are an extended part of their Family.

Yesterday when I awakened the player piano was playing and I felt like dancing (I think I did!)

What else can I say - I wish time could stand still...but until then, God willing, we will be back next year!  God bless the Osbornes.  May they continue to be available so that folks can continue to make happy memories here in our beloved Ocean City, New Jersey.

'Ocean City' is the best place for so many things.  The ocean has such a calming effect and the people here are so nice.  The Osbornes make our stay a treat.  Here we are with many of our Family members.  It's great to make memories that can last a lifetime.

Thanks to the Osborne Family for some great vacations!  I have been coming to Ocean City since the 1980's and have never stayed at such a great place as the Osborne Inn.  Thanks for so many great years and so many memories.

I started coming to Ocean City in the early 1990's.  We started off down on 8th and Atlantic with a small room/bath with a mini fridge.  The first thing we noticed was how beautifully quiet it was.  What a nice change from Wildwood and even the Margate/Longport area.  In fact people were so 'laid back' kist crpssomg the busy streets at 8th Street, we started saying, 'Look there's the Stepford Wives'.  Then a fire chief I used to work with recommended the Osborne House at 15th and Wesley Avenue.  What a great recommendation!  I've been bringing my family to Peggy Ann's for seven nows now.  This is 'The Place' for family relaxation, fun, beautiful beaches, good food, and great times.  Peg has always made it more special with her open arms and a real sense of extended family love.  Peggy Ann, Frank and all her family have a special place in my heart that will always be there.  With much love to you all from Debbie, Michael and Michelle

September, 2002

We always have a wonderful time when we come to Ocean City, NJ, somewhere my husband has been vacationing since 1943, when he and his parents and brother would come on the train from Perkasie, PA.  We also vacationed here with our children as they were growing up and would come each summer for two or three nights.  We remember Hogate's Restaurant, Chris's Speed Boat, the Flanders Hotel and other motels that have been bought, remodeled and renamed.  We always enjoy our stay at Osborne's.  the rooms are pleasant and bright and are decorated so appropriately for the shore location.  It is also great to be so close to the boardwalk and the beach.  We love it.

Love coming with my family!
