From my earliest recollections as a child, summer and Ocean City were always synonymous. From the time of my birth in 1955 to the summer of 1970, our family never missed a summer where we did not spend at least one week in Ocean City. As a child, I remember that we usually stayed around the 29th Street and Asbury Avenue area because the beaches were much wider at that end of Ocean City. One summer I got to spend a week in the Gardens section of Ocean City as it was called back then. My uncle, who was a Catholic priest, served during the summers at St. Francis Cabrini, and I got to spend a week or so at the rectory of the church. My uncle would then drive me down to 29th Street where I would meet a very good friend and I’d spend the day at the beach. At night, EVERY NIGHT, it was the Boardwalk!
There are several things about the boardwalk that are special to me. Mack and Manco’s Pizza, Copper Kettle Fudge, the Fairytale and Polynesian Golf courses were all frequently visited by me as a child. What a thrill it was for me when the Wonderland Pier was built. The summer that it opened in 1969 I think I rode every ride!
From 1971 to 1988 I was not able to make it back to Ocean City. However, in 1989, after wearing my family out talking about Ocean City, NJ, we decided to go. What a surprise to discover that you had to buy beach tags to be able to goon the beach! What a surprise to discover that there was a beach around the boardwalk! What a disappointment to find a '7-11' on the Boardwalk (sacrilege)! But what a joy to have my own children ride the very rides I enjoyed at Wonderland Pier in its 20th anniversary year. That was very special indeed!
From 1989 to the present, we have been to Ocean City five times. Of those five times, twice we have enjoyed the hospitality of the Osborne Inn and hope to continue to do so in those years that our vacation plans include Ocean City. It is with pride that I say that my children are now the fourth generation of the Hansell Family that love Ocean City!
